Seedling: Digital Biology

Concept

Seedling represents a fusing of my design and photographic interests. This project entailed the development of an “alien seedling”, as a way of understanding biological growth, and digital manufacturing processes.

Development

In this project, I looked at a variety of seedlings, pods, and pollen types from plants. With each example, I researched how the biological process that each seedling undertook informed its visual characteristics. With this new understanding, I designed a number of “alien seedlings”, that looked completely unique but were each visually informed by their own “growth processes”. After refining a chosen model, I FDM Printed it in a variety of orientations, infills, and deposition patterns. I paused each print at varying points, and macro-photographed them to showcase how each “digital growth process” impacted their respective visual characteristics.
